Admin please sticky this solution.
Ive had the issue of the game downloading fine but have been unable to install it.
Ive done a few things - installed, reinstalled the game with the difference of removing all antcir and other protection in between aswell as downloading new drivers and updates.
After two days of problems i came across a solution ( http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlefield-3-technical-support-faqs/180746-cannot-install-game.html [tacticalgamer.com] ), i tried it and it works.
The post in the forum is made by 'orb1t4l' and all credit obv. goes to s/he.

just checked with a friends his is the same....its the gdf file that isnt installing on mine but his installed fine,
ok here is the fix!!! and please trust this!! its very important to get it correct
open regedit from start/search bar
Under the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow 6432NodeEA GamesBattlefield 3
I had already GDFBinary with the value being: C:Program FilesOrigin GamesBattlefield 3GDFBinary_en_US.dll
Now I did add another value called:
Install Dir
And in this one I entered the following text: C:Program FilesOrigin GamesBattlefield 3
Again this is my install path, yours might be different.
so in there i have
ab (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
ab GDFBinary REG_SZ C:Program FilesOrigin GamesBattlefield 3GDFBinary_en_US.dll
ab Install Dir REG_SZ C:Program FilesOrigin GamesBattlefield 3
After restarting origin, suddenly origin saw the game as being installed already and I could patch it and go to the
browser selection.
last problem was easy to solve: start up mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer 9, and use firefox to login on the
battlefield page, then it worked and I was able to join servers.
please forward this to as many people as possible with the stuck in install loop and the fail to install gdf files please
enjoy and see you on the battlefield..... orb1t4l

What I'm missing is basically the BF3 registry (some of it in any case)

I'm a little TICKED off that EA/DICE haven't rectified this already as its clearly a problem. Not sure what they mean by add value... it's not clear on what his means. Can access regedit and the files noted but how do I add a value etc? Been googling but it's not certain on where I put the new value. Do I put it in the same folder? or make a new one? Do I cut a nd paste the others into the new folder if need be etc

SAME that does not work for me
PS, IN CASE you might have a 64 bit windows! so your installation folder probably goes as C:/Program files (x86)/ xxxx
You might of used the folder without the x86.

It didnt work for me either... worst part is gdf binary wasnt even on my registry and i dont even have install logs in Battlefield 3 folder

Please help guys! I wasted my time downloading BF3 if it won't install. Mine doesn't have any registry file on WOW6432Node, so I just created it. There's a Origin Games registry with numbers and it shows as BF3 without GDFBinary there.
