Troubleshooting and repairing a clothes dryer that blows cold air may not be a project for a beginner. No matter whether the dryer is heated by electricity or gas, to troubleshoot and repair it effectively requires familiarity with the use of a digital or analog multimeter, knowing how to use it to make continuity and resistance readings.

Simple Things First

Although it is not common, it is possible the problem with an electrically heated clothes dryer is a partially tripped circuit breaker, where only one of the hot legs trips open, while the other remains closed. Since the dryer motor operates on 120 volts, the motor continues to operate, but the dryer's heating element does not work because it needs 240 volts -- which requires both hot legs. Try resetting the circuit breaker before taking apart the dryer. With a gas-heated dryer, make sure the gas to the dryer has not been shut off before disassembling the dryer for troubleshooting.

Dryer Service Information

Most Whirlpool dryers have a schematic wiring diagram glued to the back or inside of the dryer's cabinet. In some cases, the wiring schematic is tucked away inside the control panel. The minimum service information you need to troubleshoot your dryer is a wiring schematic. If there is no diagram attached to the dryer, you need to get one. In most cases, you can download one from the manufacturer's website (whirlpool.com), or you can order one from Whirlpool's customer service department -- just provide the make, model and serial number for your dryer.

Troubleshooting Electrically Heated Dryers

With electrically heated dryers, the most common problems are a defective thermostat or an open heating element. Depending on the model of your dryer, there are at least two thermostats in the heating element circuit: a high-limit thermostat and a cycling thermostat. The cycling thermostat normally controls the on and off of the heating element. If the cycling thermostat is stuck in the open position, the dryer blows cold air. The high-limit thermostat is a safety thermostat designed to keep the dryer from reaching dangerously high temperatures if the cycling thermostat does not open at its preset temperature. In some cases, the high-limit thermostat is a thermal fuse; if this thermal fuse has burned open, the dryer blows cold air. Thermal fuses do not reset, and need to be replaced. When replacing a thermal fuse, it is good practice to replace the cycling thermostat at the same time, because odds are it is sticking in the closed position -- causing the dryer to reach unsafe temperatures. If the thermostats check out good, check for continuity of the heating elements. The nichrome element wire can weaken from expansion and contraction, and break over time. The clothes dryer timer is the source of the problem if the dryer heats on certain timer settings but blows cold air on others.

With gas-heated dryers, you have the same cycling and high-limit thermostats to check for continuity, but you also have three other possible sources of trouble: the thermostatic gas control valve, the flame sensor and the igniter. If the thermostats check good, check the resistance reading on the igniter, flame sensor and gas control valve. If all these devices check good electrically, the problem most likely is a gas control valve that is mechanically jammed in the closed position. When replacing any clothes dryer components, make sure you replace them with an exact replacement part for the dryer.
